    [Download PDF] [abstract]

Consumers highly appreciate table grapes for their pleasant sensory attributes and as good sources of nutritional and functional compounds. This explains the rising market and global interest in this product. Along with other fruits and vegetables, table grapes are considerably perishable post-harvest due to the growth of undesired microorganisms. Among the microbial spoilers, Botrytis cinerea represents a model organism because of its degrading potential and the huge economic losses caused by its infection. The present review provides an overview of the recent primary physical, chemical, and biological control treatments adopted against the development of B. cinerea in table grapes to extend shelf life. These treatments preserve product quality and safety. This article also focuses on the compliance of different approaches with organic and sustainable production processes. Tailored approaches include those that rely on controlled atmosphere and the application of edible coating and packaging, as well as microbial-based activities. These strategies, applied alone or in combination, are among the most promising solutions in order to prolong table grape quality during cold storage. In general, the innovative design of applications dealing with hurdle technologies holds great promise for future improvements.

Electrical energy production from renewable sources has dramatically grown in the recent years in the developed countries, putting the hard problem to be solved of supply discontinuity. How to reach high efficiency and reliability of electrical energy storage system is thus now one of the most challenging goals to be reached: among all, one of the most simple and widespread to use is the electrochemical storage systems. This paper analyzes the sustainability of a small vanadium redox flow battery performed by an LCA approach. This electrical energy storage system was selected for its significant advantages in use, such as the almost infinite lifetime of the vanadium electrolytes, which represent a potentially significant advantage in terms of a sustainable future made of less fossil fuels and more renewable energy. In fact, the LCA analysis performed shows that the production of the battery has a moderate impact, including the effect toxicity while at the end of life, the material and the electrolyte are completely reusable with a small fraction that goes to landfill disposal.

Despite the recent growing interest in the “factory smartness”, still there are only few small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that adopt effective Industry 4.0 (I4.0) solutions. The main reasons can be related to the lack of formalized processes, lack of ICT knowledgeas well as low-cost commercial systems. To cope with these issues, this work focuses on the development and the application of an approach to provide SMEs with a multi-purpose, modular, knowledge-based system: the main aim is to provide a modular and extensible system that can be incrementally implemented without requiring huge initial investments. This system is based on a core design-knowledge meta-model. From this core meta-model, multi-purposes modules can be built: in this paper, we present modules for the traceability support, the AR-powered assembly support, the machine-to-machine control and the data analysis support.

The paper describes a cyber-physical approach to resolve the automation of quality and reliability enforcement in a manufacturing environment. The approach is based on an architecture of distributed sensors array connected to a local minicomputer, which further communicates using a secured internet connection with an industry 4.0 facilitator hub. The proposed architecture creates an extensible framework to support multi-domain requirements. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated in the case of a composite materials manufacturing installation.

    [Download PDF] [abstract]

Highly customized products with shorter life cycles characterize the market today: the smart manufacturing paradigm can answer these needs. In this latter production system context, the interaction between production resources (PRs) can be swiftly adapted to meet both the variety of customers’ needs and the optimization goals. In the scientific literature, several architectural configurations have been devised so far to this aim, namely: hierarchical, heterarchical or hybrid. Whether the hierarchical and heterarchical architectures provide respectively low reactivity and a reduced vision of the optimization opportunities at production system level, the hybrid architectures can mitigate the limit of both the previous architectures. However, no hybrid architecture can ensure all PRs are aware of how orienting their behavior to achieve the optimization goal of the manufacturing system with a minimal computational effort. In this paper, a new “hybrid architecture” is proposed to meet this goal. At each order entry, this architecture allows the PRs to be dynamically grouped. Each group has a supervisor, i.e. the optimizer, that has the responsibility: (1) to monitor the tasks on all the resources, (2) to compute the optimal manufacturing parameters and (3) to provide the optimization results to the resources of the group. A software prototype was developed to test the new architecture design in a simulated flow-shop and in a simplified job shop production.

In this paper, we target collaborative kerbside collection from a planning and real-time monitoring point of view. This is a non-trivial problem, where several vehicles are set on streets to finish a task—the collection of all waste—by a certain maximum amount of time. While deciding upon a collaborative strategy is a well-studied and complex problem by itself, we focus as well on re-planning, whenever live data collected by the vehicles suggest that the current scenario has deviated from the provisional plan, due to changes in external environmental factors. To this end, we propose a global mission-management architecture, which tries to optimize at once the time required to finish the waste collection, the distance traveled by the vehicles, the amount of fuel burnt (accounting as well for idle time at collection points), and the impact of pollutants emissions.

An exhibition system is typically a physical open space made of several buildings devoted to performing demonstrations or social activities. Several examples of exhibition systems can be found word wide. The management of these spaces, even in presence of a limited number of activities, requires significant efforts: safety, welcome, merchandising, public services, etc. Nowadays, the new trend is to offer multiple, contemporary use of exhibition spaces, allowing exhibition events and regular social activities (commercial, cultural, etc.) to be dynamically intertwined, either to endeavor the huge economic investments behind infrastructures or to increase the attractiveness of the exhibition activities. This is the case of “Fiera del Levante”, one of the oldest exhibitions located in a fascinating central area on the seaside of the city of Bari – Italy. Here, multiple social scopes, such as multi-exhibitions and contemporary social activities related to public offices, restaurants and entertainment, live together. This is an almost unique setting, which makes Fiera del Levante (FdL) a complex system and makes the management of the exhibition a challenging co-management task. The paper deals with the development and demonstration of a complex-system modeling framework for the decision support of the co-management of Fiera del Levante exhibition system, taking into account the interaction both physical aspects (building assets, infrastructure, equipment, fittings, …) and intangible aspects (permanent and temporary events, management and business activities, etc) and, of course, considering as a main input the needs of the different stakeholders involved.

abstract = {An exhibition system is typically a physical open space made of several buildings devoted to performing demonstrations or social activities.
This is the case of “Fiera del Levante”, one of the oldest exhibitions located in a fascinating central area on the seaside of the city of Bari - Italy. Here, multiple social scopes, such as multi-exhibitions and contemporary social activities related to public offices, restaurants and entertainment, live together. This is an almost unique setting, which makes Fiera del Levante (FdL) a complex system and makes the management of the exhibition a challenging co-management task.
The paper deals with the development and demonstration of a complex-system modeling framework for the decision support of the co-management of Fiera del Levante exhibition system, taking into account the interaction both physical aspects (building assets, infrastructure, equipment, fittings, …) and intangible aspects (permanent and temporary events, management and business activities, etc) and, of course, considering as a main input the needs of the different stakeholders involved.},

The pervasive diffusion of Information and Communication technologies (ICT) and automation technologies are the prerequisite for the preconized fourth industrial revolution: the Industry 4.0 (I4.0). Despite the economical efforts of several governments all over the world, still there are few companies, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), that adopt or intend to adopt in the near future I4.0 solutions. This work focus on key issues for implementing the I4.0 solutions in SMEs by using a specific case example as a test bench of an Italian small manufacturing company. Requirements and constraints derived from the field experience are generalised to provide a clear view of the profound potentialities and difficulties of the first industrial revolution announced instead of being historically recognised. A preliminary classification is then provided in view to start conceiving a library of Industry 4.0 formal patterns to identify the maturity of a SME for deploying Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies.

We present a multi-word atomic (1,N) register for multi-core machines exploiting Read-Modify-Write (RMW) instructions to coordinate the writer and the readers in a wait-free manner. Our proposal, called Anonymous Readers Counting (ARC), enables large-scale data sharing by admitting up to 2\textasciicircum32-2 concurrent readers on off-the-shelf 64-bit machines, as opposed to the most advanced RMW-based approach which is limited to 58 readers. Further, ARC avoids multiple copies of the register content while accessing it-this affects classical register’s algorithms based on atomic read/write operations on single words. Thus, ARC allows for higher scalability with respect to the register size.

Abstract LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is nowadays a commonly implemented approach for evaluating resource consumptions and for benchmarking purposes. It suffers some limitations, mainly related to its assumptions on linear resource -consumption behaviour as well as on the non-context specific data. On the other hand, it is an extremely powerful tool for decision-making support in the sustainability assessment of manufacturing processes, providing its well-structured approach and widely accepted procedure. Deepening the assessment capabilities of such a tool is thus an important opportunity. This paper is intended to build upon this concept by proposing an improved approach consisting in supplying in-process information concerning energy consumption and other process state conditions through thermography. The case of an Italian industrial company producing \HDPE\ (High Density Polyethylene) nets for agriculture is taken as test bed case to show pros and cons of this idea. Actually, this approach resulted into a better assessment of the sustainability profile of the whole production process in terms of energy consumptions and environmental impacts. This in turn became an updated management tool for real-time decision making closer to the real conditions.

Storage systems are becoming one of the most critical components in the scenario of energy, mainly due to the penetration and deployment of renewable sources. All-vanadium redox-flow batteries (RFB), in combination with a wide range of renewable energy sources, are one of the most promising technologies as an electrochemical energy storage system because of the independence of energy and power rating, fast response, room temperature operation, extremely long life, and low environmental impact. This article reviews the main features and applications of vanadium as a key element of RFB and provides a simple explanation of its properties and use as a means of energy storage.

Abstract This work focuses on the assessment, in terms of effectiveness, feasibility and sustainability, of three different procedures for the synthesis of vanadium-based mixed-acid electrolytes to be used in vanadium redox-flow batteries (VRFBs). Procedures considered consisted in: a) the mere mixing of suitable vanadium precursors (Electrolyte A); b) the chemical reduction of \V2O5\ by oxalic acid (Electrolyte B); c) the electrochemical reduction of \V2O5\ using a home-made “H-shaped” electrolysis cell (Electrolyte C). \VRFB\ properties such as energy efficiency, mean charge–discharge voltages, cycle duration as well as stability and conductivity of the electrolyte were analysed and compared with the state-of-the-art. Experimental tests carried out on a laboratory scale \VRFB\ battery comprised: thermal stability test, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and charge–discharge tests. A Life Cycle Assessment of the three electrolytes is also presented for benchmarking purposes.

    [abstract]

Storage systems are becoming one of the most critical components in the energy management, mainly due to the discontinuity characteristics of renewable sources. Redox flow batteries (RFB) are one of the most promising technologies as electrochemical energy storage system, because of the independence of energy and power rating, fast response, room temperature operation, and extremely long life. It is susceptible of a strong increase of its use in the next future, in particular in combination to a wide range of renewable energy sources (e.g. solar, eolic, tidal). Key factors such as the energy density and the operating temperature range depend on the properties of the battery electrolyte. This promising feature brings new questions to solve: the sustainability is one of the most critical to be faced. In this work, the vanadium electrolyte environmental sustainability is analyzed. Electrolyte is one of the most important component of the battery, having a strong impact particularly on its use. A comparative LCA analysis is performed to appreciate its potentialities for domestic use under safety conditions, providing some useful indication on its drawbacks.

The paper proposes a methodology for the optimal dispatch of energy sources in hybrid and isolated energy systems. The proposed approach is based on the formulation and solution of a non-linear discrete optimization problem aimed at optimizing input and output time trajectories for a set of combined generating and storage technologies. Loads and interruptible loads are among controlled variables and are modeled according to their interruption costs. The approach is general enough to be applied to any hybrid system configuration and was developed having in mind complex hybrid system architectures comprising several competing storage technologies (battery, pumping and hydrogen). Test results are aimed at showing the feasibility of the proposed methodology, comparing optimal trajectories to suboptimal system behavior given by load-following strategies.

Energy source management in networked enterprises is one of the crucial tasks of recent times: different energy requests as well as distribution among node-enterprise due to variety of production loads and duties exchanges may in fact bring to un-optimal energetic balance of the network. The idea of optimal balancing of energy sources within a set of nodes of an enterprise network, even though temporarily cooperating, by endeavoring a systemic perspective is the rationale of the present paper. A methodology for the optimal dispatch of energy sources in hybrid as well as isolated energy systems has been devised to this aim. The core of the methodology is based on the formulation and solution of a non-linear discrete optimization problem aimed at optimizing input and output time trajectories for a set of combined power-generation and storage technologies. The proposed approach is general enough to be susceptible of implementation in any network of enterprises to optimize the energy dispatching.

    [Download PDF] [abstract]

The aim of the present work was the optimization of a small size Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system powered by a linear Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC) solar field; a numerical model code was developed on purpose. In the proposed scheme the solar energy is collected by a newly designed low cost PTC of 20m2 with a single tracking axis and is concentrated on an opaque pipe collector in which flows as thermal fluid Therminol 66 oil. An oil-free scroll expander coupled with a 2kW electrical generator is used to convert fluid energy into electrical energy. Cogeneration is performed by accumulating the waste in a double effect tank for domestic hot water (DHW) and heating. The use of cogeneration improves the global efficiency of the system from about 12\% up to 30\%. The numerical model implements the primary and secondary circuit as well as a detailed model of the PTC and the scroll expander. Real weather data of Brindisi (Italy) is considered to estimate and to optimize the performance of the plant. The system control has been optimized with the numerical model based on a multi objective genetic algorithm to increase the performance of the expander with the development of energy-save strategies.

abstract = {The aim of the present work was the optimization of a small size Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system powered by a linear Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC) solar field; a numerical model code was developed on purpose. This work presents an intelligent demand side management (DSM) system modeled according to an auction based multi-agent system (MAS). The system is designed to improve the sustainability of energy self-production systems thanks to energy saving features while guaranteeing the maintenance of the user’s desired comfort level. The proposed system is composed of a sensor network and a central processing unit. Each network node is handled by an agent and it is able to regulate the power consumption of a single environment (e.g., a room). The first live tests were carried out within a public building. Results seems promising for maximizing the sustainability as well as the profitability of self-production energy systems

Vanadium redox flow battery is one of the most promising technologies as electrochemical energy storage system, because of independence of energy and power rating, fast response, room temperature operation, and extremely long life. Vanadium redox flow battery is suitable to work in combination to a wide range of renewable energy application (e.g. solar, eolic, tidal). Due to the intrinsic discontinuous nature of the renewable energy sources, vanadium redox flow battery may represent an efficient tool for the requalification of the energy provided to the grid. Key factors such as the energy density and the operating temperature range depend on the properties of the battery electrolyte. This work deals with a study of newly designed support electrolyte based on aqueous mixed acid solutions conceived to overcome the performance of a conventional vanadium redox flow system.

The common classification techniques are designed for a rigid (even if probabilistic) allocation of each unit into one of several groups. Nevertheless the dissimilarity among combined units often leads to consider the opportunity of assigning each of them to more than a single group with different degrees of membership. In previous works we proposed a fuzzy approach to discriminant analysis, structured by linearly regressing the degrees of membership of each unit to every groups on the same variables used in a preliminary clustering. In this work we show that non-linear regression models can be used more profitably than linear ones. The applicative case concerns the entrepreneurial propensity of provinces in Central and Southern Italy, even if our methodological proposal was initially conceived to assign new customers to defined groups for Customer Relationship Management (CRM) purposes

A new layout-based document image retrieval system is presented in this paper. The system is specifically designed for commercial form retrieval and uses mathematical morphology to extract structural components from the document image. Document layout description is performed by the Radon Transform whereas Dynamic Time Warping is used for matching. The experimental results have been carried out on both real and simulated data sets. They demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and their robustness with respect to different classes of commercial forms and shifted/rotated document images.

    [abstract]

Aim of this work is to present a model of an intelligent short term demand side management system (DSM) based on a distributed measurement and management data system. The system is designed to improve the profitability of modern self-production energy plants reducing the power consumption and maintaining the same comfort level for users. The DSM problem is modeled as an auction based multi-agent system. The proposed system is composed of a sensor network and a central processing unit. Each network node is handled by an agent and it is able to regulate the power consumption of a single environment (in this work a room of a public building). Each agent reacts to a new critical condition entering in competition with the others to gain the access at a shared limited resource. The competition is regulated by an auction based system. As the first experimental results are showing, the proposed system can be the consumer’s key to maximize the profitability of the self-production energy plants.

This paper presents design considerations for a low altitude short endurance electric powered ultralight aircraft with solar panels. The paper focuses on the conversion of the ultralight propulsion system from endothermic into electric, discarding the mechanic and dynamic issues from the design, and addressing the sizing consideration principally on the energy management system components. A tool is presented to optimize the choice of the battery and the panel mass.

The common classification techniques are designed for a rigid (even if probabilistic) allocation of each unit into one of several groups. Nevertheless the dissimilarity among combined units often leads to consider the opportunity of assigning each of them to more than a single group with different degrees of membership. The same logic can be applied in attributing a new observation to previously identified fuzzy groups. This paper precisely presents a proposal for a discriminant analysis, structured by regressing the degrees of membership to every groups of each unit on the same variables used in a preliminary clustering. Such a proposal, initially conceived to assign new customers to defined groups for Customer Relationship Management (CRM) purposes, is now tested in an applicative case concerning the entrepreneurial propensity of the sampled provinces of Central and Southern Italy, in which an iterative fuzzy k-means method is preliminary used to split them into an optimal number of homogeneous groups
